Growing up in central Ohio, I loved sports and I loved to write. I even planned my life around those passions. In high school I played basketball while writing for the yearbook. In college I played about every intramural sport I could find (I wasn't good enough to play for the school!) and I studied journalism and wrote for the The Post, the Ohio University student newspaper. After earning a journalism degree from Ohio University, I began a newspaper career and loved every minute of it. Now, I'm a dad of three kids 4 years and under. I no longer work in the newspaper industry because the hours and commitment simply would not work the way my wife and I manage our family.
However, I still crave writing. I finished my first book, Odyssey: From Blue Collar, Ohio to Super Bowl Champion, last fall and, all things considered, I consider it a success. But I still want to write; the time for long projects, however, is not there.
That's where this blog comes in. I want to continue writing about what I love. I want to stay sharp and continue to open up a dialogue about sports and life in general. I used to have a podium in the newspaper business; this blog will have to make due for now.
Thank you for your interest and please come back often. Tell your friends, too!
"It was so satisfying to read. The play details were exciting, but the
human interest parts woven throughout were inspiring."
"Marc's story appeals to
the "average Joe" in each of us, the part that enjoys knowing it's
possible to rise up from humble beginnings to achieve lofty goals."
"I have read the book and you did a great job. You got Marc's story right on the money. I enjoyed it!"
"I came
across this book about Marc, ordered a copy, and it was a great read. It
explained a lot about who Marc was and brought back a ton of memories
from watching him play in the mid-90s. I love biographies on football
players and this one is another good one. I recommend this book!"
"Wow, this is awesome! A great book to purchase and add to my Notre Dame library."
"A fun story. Great to see someone make it instead of settling in life. A well written, entertaining story; one I would recommend to any football fan or anyone interested in a positive (finally!) story coming out of the sports world."
The journey to the sporting world’s grandest stage – the Super Bowl
– is often wrought with overwhelming obstacles, personal challenges, and a
workload that would make most men cringe. No one understands this more than Norwood’s Marc Edwards, whose winding road from his home on Ashland Avenue to
the NFL and ultimately the Super Bowl was littered with derailing pot holes.
How Marc became a successful family man and an old-school battering
ram of a Super Bowl champion should no longer be a mystery.
Award-winning writer Aaron
M. Smith tells the remarkable story of Marc Edwards in his book Odyssey: From Blue Collar, Ohio to Super Bowl Champion. It chronicles
Marc’s phenomenal journey from growing up in Norwood, to playing for Lou Holtz at Notre
Dame, and to holding the Lombardi Trophy high over his head on one incredible
Sunday night in New Orleans.
