Aaron M. Smith began his journalism career at the Urbana Daily Citizen before being named as the Sports Editor at the Port Clinton News Herald. Smith won numerous writing and production awards during his stint at both papers. Click to read some of his standout articles.

Since leaving the newspaper industry, Aaron M. Smith has worked as a freelance writer. From writing a series of feature stories on landless camps in Brazil to profiles in alumni magazines to copy writing for local businesses, Smith provides a wide variety of services. Aaron M. Smith earned a journalism degree from the nationally recognized E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. Since graduating, Smith earned several awards for writing and editing at various newspapers in Ohio, taught English to middle school students

in California, and wrote two books as a freelance writer. 

In addition to non-fiction, Smith is working on several fiction pieces ranging from short stories to novels. He recently was longlisted in the Retreat West First Chapter of a Novel Competition.

Short Stories

Aaron M. Smith has competed in the NYC Midnight Short Story and Flash Fiction writing contests, earning first place in his group multiple times. Competition judges have lauded Smith's "well written prose" and his ability to tell an "original story." After his first place finish in the first round of the 2022 Short Story Competition, the judges said, "this is a great story and the writer should be proud."

WIP: Novel

Aaron M. Smith's current Work in Progress is a currently untitled realistic fiction crime novel. The first chapter of this project was recently long-listed by Retreat West in its 2022 First Chapter Contest. The judges said this chapter "was a strong contender for the short list and we were really impressed. It reminded me of a Coen Brothers film setup."
